Neuro-Beauty Ingredient Guide
This guide explains ingredients mentioned in Jonquil Beauty’s Neuro-Beauty article. For ingredient names and listed cosmetic functions, we consult the European Commission’s CosIng database and use INCI to cross-check label names. CosIng is an informational reference; a listing does not establish approval, safety, or effectiveness. Benefits and concerns below are qualified against research or regulator guidance.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
A botanical ingredient used in some skin-care formulas, often as a root extract. One small placebo-controlled study tested a specific lotion with 8% standardized root extract on 56 adults for 60 days. That does not establish that every ashwagandha extract has the same effects, or that topical ashwagandha lowers cortisol or treats stress. Formula, extract, and evidence matter. CosIng lists skin conditioning; read the topical study.
Bakuchiol
A plant-derived cosmetic ingredient commonly marketed for the look of uneven tone, texture, and visible signs of aging. It is not retinol and should not be described as equivalent. A systematic review found human studies, but many were open-label or lacked control groups, and some tested combination products. Current evidence does not establish that bakuchiol is always gentler or better tolerated than retinoids. CosIng lists antioxidant, antimicrobial, and skin-conditioning functions; read the 2024 systematic review.
Beta-glucan
A family of polysaccharides found in sources including oats, yeast, and mushrooms. In skin-care products it is used in moisturizing and skin-conditioning formulas. Its properties can vary with source, structure, and formulation, so findings about one beta-glucan should not automatically be applied to every product with that name. CosIng lists bulking and skin-conditioning functions; read the 2025 review.
Ceramides
Lipids naturally present in the outer layer of skin. Along with cholesterol and fatty acids, they help form the skin barrier that limits water loss and helps keep irritants out. Topical products containing ceramides may support barrier care, but the formula and how the ceramides are incorporated affect performance. CosIng lists hair-conditioning and skin-conditioning functions for Ceramide NP; read the 2024 review on ceramides and formulation.
Mushroom extracts: reishi, chaga, and tremella
“Mushroom extract” describes ingredients from different species, so the name alone does not show that two extracts have the same composition or effects. Tremella has been studied for potential skin-care uses, but its review literature calls for more clinical research. Findings about one species should not be generalized to all mushroom extracts. CosIng lists Tremella as antioxidant, humectant, and skin- and hair-conditioning; read the review of Tremella fuciformis.
Phosphatidylserine
A phospholipid found in cell membranes. A topical study has examined skin-related outcomes, but limited research does not establish broad claims that phosphatidylserine in cosmetics changes mood, lowers stress, or reduces cortisol. Evidence about an oral supplement is not evidence about a topical cosmetic. CosIng lists emulsion-stabilising, hair-conditioning, skin-conditioning, and skin-protecting functions; read the topical study.
Linalool and limonene
Fragrance compounds found in many fragrance materials and essential oils. Some people develop irritation or allergic contact dermatitis from fragrance ingredients. If you have a known fragrance allergy or sensitivity, check the product label and follow advice from your health professional. A scent may shape how a routine feels, but that is different from evidence that a cosmetic changes brain chemistry or treats mood. CosIng lists both as perfuming ingredients; Limonene is also listed as a solvent. These function categories do not establish mood effects. Linalool in CosIng; Limonene in CosIng.
